WHAT PREVIOUS YEARS' SCHOLARS ARE SAYING...
I’m honored to be a 2021-2022 ARCS scholar. This award helped fund my move across the country and pay for tuition at my dream graduate program—the UC Santa Cruz Science Communication Program. Thanks to the ARCS Foundation’s support, I will have the education and alumni network to successfully launch my science journalism career. I’m now one step closer to achieving my goals of making science more accessible, investigating issues of bioethics, and evolving artistic forms of journalism.

I am honored to be recognized as an ARCS scholar. ARCS seeks to sponsor bright students with the goal of fostering the next generation of scientific progress. As a young scientist, constantly wrestling with self-doubt and imposter syndrome, recognition by such an acclaimed organization gives me confidence that I am on the right track in my scientific career. ARCS sees my potential as a scientist, and I am so very grateful that the support of ARCS foundation provides me the flexibility to pursue my scientific interests.

As a graduate student in a new lab, funding from the ARCS award alleviated strain on myself and my mentor, allowing us to gather important data instead of focusing all our time on seeking funding. I have been able to perform experiments which are not only fundamental to my PhD work but lay the groundwork for future students to come. This data will allow us to develop improved innate immunotherapeutics which balance the need for affordability and specificity to the individual.
University of California, San Francisco
Without ARCS, I could have faced funding instability, jeopardizing my ability to stay in the Bay Area and learn from some of the best scientists in the world. I see the ARCS award as an investment in my future as a scientist, and I’m grateful to the ARCS donors and organizers for supporting young scholars like myself for over fifty years.

ABOUT THE SCHOLAR SYMPOSIUM
The first ARCS Northern California Chapter (NCC) Scholar Symposium was held in 2015. Now in its 9th year, it has evolved and merged with our annual Scholar Celebration into this incredible combined Scholar Celebration and Symposium event.
The event is part of the ARCS Scholar Award Program, our annual initiative to support the research endeavors of exceptional graduate students at our seven partner universities. The Scholar Award Program enables scholars to give maximum attention to their research by receiving meaningful scholar awards, raises the visibility of ARCS Scholars’ research, increases ARCS Scholars’ science communication skills, and connects ARCS Scholars to industry and to each other.
