WELCOME
“ARCS SUPERNOVA 2024: The Minds of TODAY Creating Solutions for TOMORROW”
This annual signature event of ARCS Foundation Northern California Chapter (NCC) serves as a pivotal platform to celebrate ARCS Scholars and to recognize them as emerging scientists, amplifying the visibility of their pioneering research, and offering them invaluable opportunities for public speaking engagement.
This year, we applaud 84 ARCS NCC Scholars representing a diverse array of disciplines and research interests. These scholars, all US citizens, have been carefully selected from 101 departments across seven esteemed academic institutions: San Francisco State University, Stanford University, and the University of California campuses at Berkeley, Davis, Merced, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz. In addition to the opportunity to celebrate these scholars, SUPERNOVA serves as a symposium, a pivotal platform for showcasing the scholars’ remarkable work and intellect.
SCHOLAR SYMPOSIUM
This website is the online version of the SUPERNOVA symposium. In the Poster Halls, you’ll find each scholar’s biography, a 3-minute video, and a research poster, to gain deeper insights into scholars’ innovative pursuits.
And, you can watch the recordings of the event’s two stimulating scholar roundtables, each moderated by esteemed industry and science education leaders and featuring 4 scholar panelists. The panels discuss current topics of societal interest. This year’s subjects include the importance of science communication and the positive impacts of artificial intelligence use in scientific research.

SCHOLAR QUOTE
“
I am sincerely grateful for the generous award from the ARCS Foundation to pursue solving the
mysteries of biological mechanisms. I am particularly excited about the opportunity to present my work
and learn about the work of other ARCS Scholars at the annual symposium.
I strongly believe in the value and importance of science communication and am grateful for the chance
to develop this skill. I am also looking forward to the roundtable discussions…I am eager to hear
different perspectives and expertise regarding relevant topics in science research.
Thank you for helping build a science community with opportunities to both practice communicating our
own science and learn from our peers. Thank you for funding graduate student research to help alleviate
some of the obstacles that are in the way for many who aspire to pursue a PhD and subsequently
promoting diversity in science.

Now that I am in graduate school… it is extremely difficult to balance work and school, especially because research is so demanding. I plan to use the money to help support myself so that I do not need to work as much and may redirect my physical and mental energy into school, allowing me to focus more on my thesis project.

It is beautiful to be a part of a community that works together to champion scientific research. My colleagues were incredibly excited to hear that I had received an ARCS Foundation Award, because many past and present members of my lab received support from this award. Thus, I am not only thankful for my award but also for the past awards that funded the work of multiple generations of researchers in my field. I would not be where I am today without their contributions and guidance, and I look forward to continuing our path of discovery.
